Introduction

Overview: During the course, we introduce the media (broadcast, press, and platforms / social media) as a business sector. We cover business models from various stakeholders' perspectives; making money with the media is at the core of this management course. We focus on public and private broadcasting (TV / radio) and streaming, discuss issues of journalism crucial for any democracy , and touch upon the business of creative industries (film, music, games). Throughout the course, we familiarize students with media in digital times - focusing on the impact of artificial intelligence (AI), media platforms and channels, and advertising targeting.

Practicalities: We will send the complete set of slides and the literature list before the first session to those students registered via KLIPS ('Belegphase'). We will ask students to bring a print-out (yes, paper!) of the slide set to class. While we will introduce the course as a whole in the first session, we strongly recommend that students carefully read the slides for any session before the session it is much faster than reading them afterwards and, certainly, fosters students' oral participation!

We organize all 4-hour sessions as a combination of material presentation, exercises, discussions, and feedback to students. Together, the sessions prepare very well for the final test. During the sessions, students may also suggest their own discussion topics mostly depending on what is going on in 'the real world'. There is no mandatory reading beyond the slides and the material, which we cover in class.

Dates - all '26 (max. 7) plus events / visits in Cologne

Oct. 15, Oct. 22, Oct. 29, Nov. 05 (Guest speaker!), Nov. 12, Nov. 18 (Wednesday!), Nov. 19, Dec. 03, Dec. 10, and Dec. 17 (sessions in January only in the case of unforeseeable events)

We try to arrange for some more special offerings throughout the semester -- partially depending on the number of registered students (which means, you will have to be a bit patient until Sept. 30, the latest). Any information will be uploaded HERE, shared with the above mentioned slide set before the first session, and - of course - be discussed in detail during the first session. It shall be fun!
