Modul 25005: Medienmanagementseminar Media Research (SS '07)
C. Loebbecke (with Assistants)
Wahlpflichtveranstaltung, 2 SWS, 6 Credit Points (LP)
Overview
The course will cover the basics
of scientific work
focussing
on media management and systems. We will prepare for writing short papers and
a
diploma thesis,
discuss research approaches, read
& review
research papers, and
look
at personal works by selected
authors and their
respective careers.
The course will be
taught in ENGLISH! Preparation will not be necessary. Registration (see
below) is
mandatory.
GROUP WORK is mandatory. Groups of two or three
students need to be formed before or during the first course meeting, individual
work is impossible!
We recommend groups of THREE students (it helps to share work and learn
about group work!).
Dates
and Location
12.04., 19.04., 26.04., 03.05.,
10.05., 21.06., 28.06.
(all '07), 17:45-21:00 h in XXIII.
The number of actual class sessions depends on the number of participants.
Participation in all sessions but one
90 minute session (!) is required for receiving Credit
Points!
Written
Assignments
Groups of 3 students receive research papers. For
those papers, the groups
prepare assignments including an
outline of the authors' bios, a
short summary of the paper, a description of the
research methodology
used in the paper and a
critical but constructive review. The review comprises errors of fact, logic,
or form, discusses the errors concerning the chances of
getting fixed, and makes suggestions, how to fix them or how
to improve next time.
Specialty
We offer students to join us
on our trip to Bled conference which will take place in
Bled, Slovenia,
from June 4 to June 6, 2007 (www.bledconference.org) and meet the authors
and question
them
during or after
their presentations.
Authors love it when somebody has read their paper! Bled authors come from all
over the world, mostly Europe and Australia, though. We pre-select the papers so that you get to know fun
authors and that they may even reply to an eMail
ahead of time.
Constraint: Bled is during 'Pfingstferien', but it is a peaceful vacation place! Bled costs money: about 1,000 km by car or train group ticket,
accommodation (rather cheap for students), and 200 Euros registration fee per
head. We cover 100 Euros of those 200
Euros
for Cologne MM students. Bled will
be great fun (we took master students to Bled before, they said it was fun!),
but it is NOT required for successfully taking the course.
