All Special Sessions are also relevant for the exam!
Grading / Credit Points
Grading will be based on
It is required to at least 'pass' (grade 4.0 or better) each grading element for passing the course.
"Alle Prüfungselemente müssen mindestens bestanden sein."
Final Assignment due on Jan. 15, '18, 11:00 am
Task
Choose either Eyeo (Adblock
Plus) or Zattoo (German market) and provide an academically written business
analysis (market analysis, competitive situation, market outlook) for the chosen
company ending with your DERIVED suggestion who (which KIND OF INVESTOR) may
want to invest into the chosen company.
We do NOT CARE about press or company references that you rephrase. Instead, we
about YOU ANALYZING the chosen company and its market, competitors with analytic
tools. Any statements which are NOT DERIVED from your ANALYSIS do not count at
all. It is irrelevant who you suggest as investor (even if none) as long as your
suggestion follows your CONCEPTUALLY FOCUSED analysis. Whether you apply several
tools or just one is not important as long as you ANALYZE.
Formatting Requirements
DIN A4, 2 cm margin top,
bottom, right, and left; text: Times New Roman 12; single spaced; black on
white; references in the text (no footnotes), figures / tables drawn / written
by you, NO INSERTING of any copied figures etc.
In your assignment, every letter in figures, legends, tables must be Times New
Roman 12 (anything that appears in smaller print will be considered as not
provided).
No separate cover sheet (have your name, Matr. Number, sMail address,
study program, and begin of program (1st master semester) on top of the first
page. Then continue typing. Have your name on the left side of the header and
the page number on the right side of the header on each following page.
Provide a correct ,
complete and consistently formatted reference list at the end.
Total: 5-10 page (analytic content counts!)
Advice
Use some properly search
scientific articles and apply their argument(s) / analyses to your case. DO NOT
LOOK FOR articles that cover your chosen company. There is no need that your
cited articles are rather new; it may make more sense to apply an old tool /
concept correctly to the new world / your case. Rephrsing what others have done
does not help. Reference your sources properly.
Start (early in your paper) by spending not more than 150 words on introducing
the company, mainly its business model and situation. Present what you need for
YOUR ANALYSIS, not what you find on their website ... Do not cite company
persons, do not offer precise numbers ...

Writing Style and Citations
Scientific writing style - no jokes, no slang, hardly any passive voice.
Strreamlining of your text / writing style: [NOT: in the text ... published where in the year then (Disney 2011), the author says ...; BUT Disney (2011) says ... and the info to Disney 2011 would be in the ref list]. Avoid repetitions.
Awareness that you barely know what an author has thought or felt, you only know what he / she said or found etc
Use of at least a spell and grammar checker !
Consistent format (including spacing)
References IN THE TEXT (no footnotes), avoid "ibid.", avoid "f." or "ff."; avoid "see", avoid "cf.".
Page numbers of references only for word-by-word citations; but just a term, especially a term that is used several times in the cited paper, is not necessarily a word-by-word citation.
If you refer to other authors, the literature, other publications, you MUST offer references (in the text with author names and year) and in the reference list the complete proper reference -- no excuse! And "The litarature" is more than one reference, and typically something well established, frequently cited ...
If you cite a single author papers, figure out whether it is a she or a he, before you use the article. If it is a multiple author source, it is still ONE paper (followed by singular) or it is at least two authors (followed by plural).
Complete reference list formatted appropriately with all required information per file (see mtm.uni-koeln.de) - even if it is only one source.
Intermediate Assignment due on Dec. 06, '17, 11:00 am
Task
Present
TWO of the THREE references listed below (and sent to you by eMail).
Focus on the question that the paper studies and explain the main insights /
answer. What did the authors find (add to the literature)? what is their
argument?
We do not care about why this is relevant, their research settings,
or how the authors did it. So, please do not explain statistics or
modeling. Obviously: Do not copy the paper abstract (200 words each).
Add another 300 words on integrating the findings of the two papers that you chose on ONE concern that they both tackle even if from rather different angles. Feel free to provide complementary insights from the academic literature, do not present any example!

Mandatory Pre-Assignment due on Oct. 11, '17, 11:00 am
Task
Read & summarize Caves (2002), Chapter 14 in about 250 words - not the complete book, i.e., do not just copy the book abstract
Read & summarize Knee et al. (2009), Chapter 6 in about 250 words - not the complete book, i.e., do not just copy the book abstracts!
Add another 250 words on how the two chapters represent similar or contrasting lines of argument regarding the 'sharing economy'. Advice: Relate to marginal costs and transaction costs.
