Course Description and Background

This course covers the economics and management of journalism and journalistic products. In particular, we will look into the following topics:

Success factors of journalistic products
Market failure and the demand for journalistic products, e.g. differences between societal and individual demand for "journalism"
Political economy of journalism
Media performance, journalistic quality, and media bias (in particular the impact of Information Technology on the demand for distorted news)
The relevance of journalisms brands and journalists as brands in a digital environment

Mandatory Pre-Assignment
The Pre-Assignment and all details will be eMailed to students registered for the course on OUR MTM website and by signed application form (see below) on Oct. 02, '17. The Pre-Assignment is due on Oct. 10, '17, 11:00 am via eMail from your sMail account. All other details to follow on Oct. 02, '17.

Field Trip
The course closes with a 3-4 day field trip in March '18. We will visit a number of leading media companies based in NRW and Hamburg (possibly DuMont Mediengruppe, FUNKE Mediengruppe, Gruner+Jahr, Der SPIEGEL, Google, Axel Springer). The trip might incur costs of approximately 250€ per student (likely less) for travel and accommodation. All students of the seminar are encouraged/expected to participate in all parts of the field trip, but it does not count into grading!

Grading / Credit Points

Grading will be based on

25%: Pre-assignment. It will be handed out on Oct. 02, '17 to all students who have registered for the course via the MTM website (individual). The Pre-Assignment is due on Oct. 10, '17, 11:00 am via eMail from your sMail account. All other details to follow on Oct. 02, '17.
25%: Documentation of the group presentation on the research questions on Dec. 15, '17.
25%: Documentation of the group presentation on leading media companies on Jan. 19, '18.
25%: Final paper (max 5 pages, double-spaced, due Mar. 23, '18, 11:00 am). Details will be announced in the first session -- individual.

Students need to pass all grading elements in order to pass the course.

A successful registration requires

(1) an MTM-Master-Account,

(2) online registration here for the course, and

(3) a signed application form in our mailbox, Pohligstr.1, 50969 Cologne.

Registration is binding (last chance to withdraw is on Oct. 05 '17, 6:00 pm. Participation is limited - we will forward the participant list to the WiSo-PA considering the registration sequence and perhaps waiting list for final admission. Later registration will NOT be possible.
